Common Questions
No pressure, no jargon. Just clear answers to the questions we hear every day.
Periodontal (gum) diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are serious infections that, left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The word periodontal literally means “around the tooth.” Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many teeth. It begins when the bacteria in calculus (the sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth) causes the gums to become inflamed.
Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease. It causes the gums to become red, swollen, and bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort at this stage. Gingivitis is often caused by inadequate oral hygiene. Gingivitis is reversible with professional treatment and good oral home care.
Dr. Nguyen and the staff at Cape Cod Perio will provide you with detailed postoperative instructions. Though rarely needed, pain relief medicine and oral antibiotics may be prescribed to help speed the recovery process. Most patients are pleasantly surprised with how little discomfort they feel after the treatment.
Some patients need or request sedation to alleviate anxiety associated with treatment. Dr. Nguyen will discuss all available sedation options with you and together you’ll determine what is best for your case. If you are a candidate for sedation, a board certified Anesthesiologist will join the doctor to administer and monitor your sedation.
Untreated gingivitis can advance to periodontitis. With time, calculus can spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums. The toxins stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body in essence turns on itself, and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed. Gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums) that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. Often, this destructive process has very mild symptoms. Eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.
Payment is due in full at the time of your treatment. Any treatment over $1000 requires a $300 deposit at time of scheduling. It is of utmost importance to Cape Cod Perio to be able to accommodate our patients scheduling needs. If a scheduled appointment has been missed without notice by you, a broken appointment fee of $50 will be owed and FULL PAYMENT for the services will be required prior to rescheduling the surgery.
Take the first step toward healthier gums, stronger teeth, and renewed confidence with Cape Cod Perio. Your consultation is personalized, informative, and completely pressure-free.
